She went down to Durango
To work for the summer
I wanted to thank her for leaving us alone
I wouldn’t miss her
Cause I never kissed her
My little kid sister
Who would’ve known?
We stayed back in Wisconsin
To play for the summer
I had to thank him for leaving her alone
I wasn’t David
He wasn’t Goliath
Just my giant older brother
Shielding me from a stone
Head like a hamster wheel
The Rabbit hole had its appeal
She hopped onto our brains
And ran around in high heels
Sentences without a place
And verbs we couldn’t conjugate
Said I wasn’t thinking straight
He showed me how to meditate
Met her on the sidewalk
I chalked out a hopscotch
She could step anywhere she pleased
except on my toes
She said “I’ll respect that
Won’t draw you to combat
But you’re still gonna
see me at all of your shows”
She wasn’t a scene kid
Was never that sensitive
If she tampered with the two of us
she’d crack both our codes
And our means and our manner
Will hang on a banner
Striped black and yellow, says “Sorry we’re closed”
Way out in Durango
You’re fording the river
With your uncles and cousins
and subconscious weapons
While here in Wisconsin things return civil
With my brothers and my cousin
digging moats, arming canons, flaming arrows
To defend us from you
